I am happy to report that our Spring 2023 Tour was a triumph – our most significant national tour since the pandemic that sent the Company coast-to-coast and back again! From Philadelphia to Los Angeles, from Denver to Boston, we reminded audiences of the power of excellent modern dance performed live.
We shared extraordinary Taylor favorites, including the return of Piazzolla Caldera and Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rehearsal); Amy Hall Garner’s Somewhere in the Middle and Larry Keigwin’s Rush Hour; world premieres by Omar Román De Jesús and Resident Choreographer Lauren Lovette; and Kurt Jooss’ The Green Table. We were thrilled to be joined on the road by pianists Peggie Kampmeier, Blair McMillen, and our Music Director, David LaMarche who helped us deliver remarkable live music for both Sacre and The Green Table.
Director of Education Carolyn Adams and I continue to illuminate Paul Taylor’s legacy for artists and audiences, across time and across the country. We recognize that to fortify all performing arts, we must meet audiences where they are. And while we delighted in standing ovations from old fans and new friends, there was a host of master classes, panel discussions, and young audience matinees to elevate our School’s offerings and insights.
All told these eight weeks on the road reamplified touring’s vital role in our mission. As the time and towns flew by, I was inspired by the measurable artistic coalescence and individual growth I saw from our dancers. This process combines with audience response and energy to solidify our position as one of the leading modern dance institutions of the world.
I am very proud and very grateful to the presenters, audiences, and patrons who make it possible; not to mention the dancers and incredible production crew who pulled it off. It’s a new era indeed, and I look forward to accelerating the momentum as I plan a very special Lincoln Center experience this fall.
